Where The Stars Look Different de Cortez Brothers
Cortez Brothers Director Daniel Addelson recently shot a short film entitled Where the Stars Look Different starring two teenagers from Austin, Texas, who made their acting debut in this production. One is a Latino dreamer called Olga who grew up in the United States and who shares her summer with Lexie. The outcome of their relation will be determined by Olga´s migratory status. “While shooting a commercial, we heard about Olga`s story in Texas and were very moved. We started talks and decided to make a film that celebrates Olga, her life and all the difficulties she has had to overcome. Working with her was marvelous. We didn`t film too much in the way of dialogue, which worked well for both of them since they were not actresses. We basically covered their experiences related to a number of sensitive issues and they made their own contributions. It worked out very well as a combination of documentary and fiction,” he said. Addelson noted that when they screened the short film, it made quite a splash in the news, but the idea was always to get people talking about equality and justice in the U.S. There’s a long way to go in that regard, more so today with all the country is going through, he said, adding that “it’s very important for minorities to get more of a hearing and I hope this short film does its share.” According to the director, the Cortez Brothers production company in charge of the film was a huge supporter of the idea. “I felt very lucky and honored to work with them,” he said. As for the Covid-19 quarantine, Addelson said it gave him time to explore his style and expand his vision as a director: “I’m doing more storytelling now based on actors´ characters, and I’m writing two short films that will soon go into production.”
