Shorts International, the company behind the new channel TVCortos, being launched on DIRECTV, highlights the fact that audiences in the region are more familiar with shorts and there is an explosion of Latino filmmaker talents, are elements that make Latin America ideal for the channel.
“In Europe, those who watch short films are usually young people, but in Latin America, the audience is broader, since they have been in touch with this type of content for a longer time,” mentions Carter Pilcher, CEO of Shorts International.
He mentioned that many Latino Oscar directors started off making short films. “The films are usually exceptional. Latino directors have made as many short films as they have directed movies, they have much more experience practicing their art,” he added.
The channel, that will exhibit all their contents in Spanish –whether in the original language or subtitled in the case of films from Europe and Asia- presents short films from Argentina, Colombia, and Chile, among others. “We are seeing each market in LatAm,” he comments. He highlighted that they have a great Content Acquisitions team in Latin America, Europe, and the US.
He announced they are in conversations with several production companies to test episodic formats (10 to 15 minutes per episode).
Pilcher emphasized that each short presented is original, they have not been shown before, and are made by independent filmmakers.
TVCortos begins exclusively with DIRECTV, but in a few months aspires to enter other operators, as well as OTT. They are also in conversations to consolidate sponsorships.
