Banijay launched the Banijay Launch accelerator to support female creators of unscripted formats globally. Marie Leguizamo, general director of Banijay Mexico & US Hispanic, is the ambassador for Latin America and Mexico.
The program, introduced at Mipcom, aims at discovering and incubating new talent to support the next generation of global franchise creators. It involves mentoring selected women to help them develop these projects from the concept to their sale. The project was driven by Sharon Levy, CEO of Endemol Shine North America, and co-led by James Townley, Director of Development Content at Banijay. The call is open until December 1, 2023. Those selected will be announced at London Screenings 2024.
The initiative is a business strategy to address gender inequality and drive creativity to diversify Banijay’s talent and intellectual property globally. It is inspired by the Propelle program, an initiative created in 2020 by the executive director of Everywoman Studios, Abby Greensfelder.
As part of this project, Banijay Americas, in partnership with Everywoman Studios, commissioned the Geena Davis Institute to conduct a first-of-its-kind study on women’s inclusion in the unscripted business.
Leguizamo shared with Ríchard Izarra her enthusiasm for representing the Latin American region and encouraged them to send her ideas. “It’s for creative women; they don’t necessarily have to work in television,” she said.
PREPARING THE TEMPTATION ISLAND HUB
Leguizamo also told Ríchard Izarra that they are creating the hub to produce the renowned Banijay Temptation Island format for Amazon Prime Video, including other projects for this platform. It is worth recalling that last July, Amazon Prime Video announced the production of this nine-episode series in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, produced by Banijay México & U.S. Hispanic and Endemol Shine Brazil.
“Temptation Island is our next baby in the pot,” said Leguizamo, noting that in addition to LOL México, Colombia, and Argentina, there is the possibility of new programs for Prime Video. “Let’s see what the future brings.” Last year, they produced Jalas o Te Rajas with El Escorpion and Facundo.
