Every year the organizers of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity selects someone from the media who has been a decisive influence in making the industry what it is today and plays a fundamental role in shaping its future.The Cannes Lions pick this year is Salar Kamangar, CEO of YouTube, the video-sharing website that currently boasts 1 billion unique users worldwide.Since assuming the position in 2009, Kamangar has supervised the expansion of YouTube as a global platform. Under his leadership, the design of the YouTube site and its investments have been refocused on channels and the up-and-coming content creators behind them. The use of YouTube has grown at a tremendous rate, 6 million hours of videos are viewed every months, a 50 percent increase over a year ago. YouTube has launched TrueView, the advertising format for which advertisers only pay for ads actually visited. The number of advertisers has also doubled over the past year.Cannes Lions CEO Philip Thomas commented that YouTube has become a global phenomenon under Salars leadership Cannes Lions is delighted to recognize Salars achievements and present him with the Media Person of the Year Award.” Salar Kamangar will be presented with the honor on Wednesday, June 19 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
