The production of Chiquis sin Filtro, a docu-follow produced by JK Media Group and Busy Bee Productions for ViX, presented several challenges, according to Mirtha Miranda, the showrunner.
“One of the main challenges was covering everything happening in Chiquis’s life in just one season. Chiquis was about to finish a tour while preparing for a much larger one, she had to record a new album and promote it, make numerous trips and do interviews, and also manage her businesses and their marketing. On a personal and family level, she had to face very difficult and life-changing situations and plan her wedding, which was just around the corner,” says Miranda.
She adds that other challenges included addressing heavy topics such as sexual abuse and domestic violence “with great care,” featuring survivors to inform and raise awareness.
The goal of the docu-follow, Miranda highlights, was to show Chiquis in all her facets—not just the star, but also “Janney”: the fiancée, the older sister, the daughter, the friend, and the woman behind the scenes.
BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL
Miranda explains that in Chiquis sin Filtro, they decided to “break the fourth wall.” Chiquis would frequently speak directly to the camera, “inviting” the person on the other side of the screen to be part of her life. In addition to typical interviews, they conducted spontaneous on-the-fly (OTF) interviews to capture emotions in real time.
She noted that these elements, combined with Chiquis’s “outgoing personality and frankness,” were key to creating an intimate connection with the audience.
EIGHT MONTHS OF FILMING
Miranda highlights that the documentary crew followed Chiquis for eight months, filming in various locations in Mexico, such as Mexico City, Tijuana, Ensenada, and Monterrey, as well as in U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas, among others.
CHIQUIS SIN FILTRO CARRIES A MESSAGE
Miranda, a TV producer and writer, shares that she has always been interested in working on content with a message. “Aside from entertaining—because without a doubt, there are many funny moments—Chiquis sin Filtro carries a message of inspiration and motivation. I’m not just referring to female empowerment; we also touch on other important topics like mental health and breaking negative generational cycles,” she said.
She added that being part of the project has been rewarding. “I am sure that every bold step Chiquis has had the courage to take, in her career and personal life, will have a positive impact on many people’s lives,” she concluded.
