TelevisaUnivision unveiled its new telenovela, Juegos de Amor y Poder, a melodrama that blends romance and political thriller elements. Produced by Carlos Bardasano and starring Claudia Martín and Arap Bethke, the series premiered on Monday, the 31st, at 9:30pm on Las Estrellas in Mexico. It is an adaptation of the original Chilean story Juegos de Poder by Luis Ponce, originally produced by Mega, now with a script by Ximena Suárez and Julián Aguilar.
Bardasano highlighted an innovative aspect of the production: “We worked with three simultaneous units led by Carlos Cock, Carlos Santos, and Rolando Campos. Each directed a different universe: power, protagonists, and youth.” He added that this approach is uncommon in the industry but helped accelerate production: “Everything was shot on location, with no studio sets. We learned a lot to improve future projects.”
The cast includes well-known actors such as Eduardo Santamarina, Mayrín Villanueva, Alejandra Barros, and Silvia Pasquel. “When you have a great story, actors and crew get excited. That elevated the final product,” the producer noted.
A STORY THAT WILL SPARK CONVERSATION
Writer Ximena Suárez explained the origins of the plot: “The original Chilean story had very strong, even raw, elements. I adapted the essence: the political investigation mixed with an impossible love story.”
The narrative follows Luciana (Claudia Martín), a psychologist torn between loyalty to her adoptive father (Eduardo Santamarina), a presidential candidate accused of covering up a crime, and her romance with prosecutor Roberto (Arap Bethke).
“It’s a risky production, but carefully crafted. It will spark debate: how far would you go for love or family? It has romance, suspense, and unexpected twists. The audience may love it or not, but it will generate discussion,” Suárez said, adding that this telenovela modernizes the genre. “Telenovelas used to be much longer, but today’s viewers consume content faster and want to know what happens immediately. The shorter format helps us better capture the audience’s attention, so it has 70 episodes instead of 120.”
PRIME-TIME SLOT AND COMPETITION WITH STREAMING PLATFORMS
Bardasano acknowledged the challenge of competing with digital content: “We’ve been working with this level of visual quality since La Piloto, which I see as a transformative project in the industry. We achieved a look that audiences were demanding, similar to what streaming platforms offer. That raises the bar for us, pushing us to reach and surpass that level to remain competitive.”
Juegos de Amor y Poder will air in the prime-time slot on Las Estrellas. “We trust that the political thriller and love triangle will captivate the audience,” Suárez concluded.
