May 8, 2012

PRODU presents an interview with Carlos Vasallo, president and CEO of Cine Nostalgia and Cine Estelar, in which he talks about his career as a producer and distributor of Mexican film, and the load of Mexican movies in his power. “I started producing films in Mexico, and slowly but surely I realized that it didn’t end with producing movies. They would have to be released, and for that, I discovered I would have to be a distributor. I then realized that the only way to recover them was to control the profits. In 1980, I decided to open the first independent distributor of movies in the US market that was named American General. It competed with Azteca Films, which was the only one in the market at the time, and another small one with a big name, Columbia Pictures” Vasallo said. Today, Vasallo has the rights for more than 1,500 films, representing 30% of all existing Mexican cinema. Among the other 70%, he has about 2,500 films under contract. “I have about 4,000 titles in operation” he affirmed. In the second part of the interview, courtesy of PCTV, Vasallo tells about the importance of maintaining black and white Mexican films in their original formats because they are a perfect reflection of the era.
