Mexican director Álvaro Curiel is very satisfied to return to comedy with Reputación Dudosa, a black humor series produced by Sony Pictures Television in Mexico for Claro video and which will premiere in 2022.
Reputación Dudosa finished filming, in only six weeks, its first two seasons with a total of 16 episodes, eight per season. Currently, it is in post-production.
“In Latin America, we spend it making narco series and dramas. It’s not so easy for companies to invest in making good comedies. I was pleasantly surprised because I started my director career doing comedy and then went through a long process on other projects. When doing comedy, and particularly black comedy, you bring out your best version as a director,” said Curiel, very excited.
As a director, he is very demanding and he is never satisfied with the first episode, but this time he was and considers that this series will go on for several seasons.
He explains that in order to create a comedy capable of traveling throughout Latin America, they bet on local scriptwriters from several countries: Mexico, Argentina, Colombian, and Brazil. “Reputación Dudosa did something very important: he bet on Latin American screenwriters in a genre that is North American in every sense of the word. The Americans invest millions in a sitcom. In Latin America investors are not willing to fund this genre because they fear that we know how to do it. You feel the Mexican, Argentine, Colombian sense of humor because this series was written by a group of people. It’s very nice to see a good group of Latin American scriptwriters working on the same project,” he said.
He announced that the comedy film, Tú Eres mi Problema, starring Barbara Mori, which he wrote and directed, was acquired by Amazon and will be released in several territories worldwide in the next three months.
