After acquiring the remaining 75% that Lionsgate owned of SVOD Pantaya, Hemisphere Media Group —which had 25% of ownership— is now the total owner of the platform, which was launched in 2017 and has in stock an offer of more than 400 movies and series, becoming a leader in subscription services for Spanish-language videos. Currently it has 900,000 paid subscribers, but the base is estimated to grow from 2.5 million to 3 million by the end of 2025.
“Pantaya’s success to date ratify the tremendous appetite that viewers have for a unique content offering. Hemisphere plans to accelerate the growth of subscribers, until it becomes a must-have entertainment option for the huge and still growing Hispanic audience in the US,” said Alan Sokol, Hemisphere president and CEO.
Paul Presburger, CEO of Pantaya, added: “As a result of our focus on premium content, our understanding of the Hispanic consumer and the breadth of our offering, Pantaya is currently the industry-leading streaming service for Spanish-speaking and bilingual consumers. The affordable price, the easy-to-use interface and the wide selection of the best content in Spanish has resulted in significant growth.”
Pantaya, Lionsgate, STARZPLAY (Starz’s international premium subscription service) are creating a strategic content partnership that includes Spanish-language film and television co-productions in addition to the continued acquisition of rights to Spanish-language content from Lionsgate’s film library of more than 17,000 titles.
