Hemisphere Media Group celebrates 20th anniversary of CentroAméricaTV and WAPA América

September 13, 2024

Jorge Hidalgo, president and CEO of WAPA Media: WAPA América has become an indispensable source of news and entertainment for the Puerto Rican diaspora in the U.S.

Hemisphere Media Group announced the 20th anniversary of two of its cable networks, CentroAméricaTV (CATV) and WAPA América. These milestone celebrations taking place this month highlight the significant contributions these networks have made in serving the Central American and Puerto Rican communities in the United States.

For the past two decades, since its launch on September 15, 2004, CentroAmericaTV, or CATV, the first channel entirely dedicated to the Central American community residing in the United States, has been the official and leading network for the third-largest Hispanic community living in the country.

Offering top-rated sports, news, and entertainment programming from the most important TV networks and content providers from all six Spanish-speaking countries, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, CATV ensures that Central Americans in the U.S. stay connected to their countries of origin.

The network features the most important sporting events from the region, with exclusive rights to the First Division soccer leagues from El Salvador, Honduras, and Costa Rica. In addition, CATV provides in-depth coverage of breaking news, special events, and cultural and musical programming.

CATV also produces informative original content, such as the weekly series Inmigrantes: El Camino Hacia un Sueño, which sheds light on the arduous journey many Central Americans undertake to reach the “land of freedom” in the United States and exposes the harsh reality they face once they arrive.

CATV’S 20th ANNIVERSARY

Marina Dimitrius, VP of Pay TV & Digital Networks at Hemisphere Media Group, expressed her excitement about CATV’s 20th anniversary, saying, “Since its inception, CATV has been a fundamental platform to represent and serve the Central American community in the U.S. by providing culturally specific content that resonates with their wants and needs. We are proud to celebrate this milestone and remain committed to delivering programming that informs, entertains, and connects Central Americans to their roots and home countries.”

WAPA AMÉRICA

WAPA América, the first and only cable network dedicated to providing news and entertainment to Puerto Rican audiences in the continental U.S., has been instrumental in connecting the 6.3 million Puerto Ricans living off the Island to their culture, people, and community. Powered by WAPA TV, Puerto Rico’s #1 television network for 14 consecutive years and building upon its 70-year content tradition,

WAPA América has served as a fundamental link to the island for the Boricua diaspora since its launch on September 1, 2004. With close to 50 hours per week of live news from the award-winning NotiCentro team, Puerto Rico’s largest and most trusted news source, WAPA América ensures that Puerto Ricans in the U.S. stay informed with the most relevant, accurate, and up-to-date news, which includes Noticentro América, the only original newscast custom-made for Puerto Ricans and Caribbean Hispanics living in the U.S.

Additionally, WAPA América offers a wide range of original entertainment programming, including daily variety, entertainment news magazines, current affairs and opinion talk shows, sketch comedy, primetime variety, special events coverage, and the exclusive rights to the prestigious Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant.

Jorge Hidalgo, president and CEO of WAPA Media, expressed “WAPA América has become an indispensable source of news and entertainment for the Puerto Rican diaspora in the U.S., the second-largest Hispanic segment in the country, serving as a vital link to their homeland.”

This month’s 20th anniversary celebrations of WAPA América and CATV are a testament to Hemisphere Media Group’s dedication to serving these vibrant communities in the United States.
