Under the slogan Spanish Audiovisual: Creativity, Diversity & Success, the Spanish Screenings On Tour was featured in 2024 at the American Film Market (AFM), held from November 5 to 10 in Las Vegas. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with Spanish producers, sales agents, and access showcases and screenings of Spanish content.
Juan Antonio Vigar, director of the Málaga Festival, told PRODU that this project has been developed alongside the San Sebastián Festival and its director, José Luis Remolinos, with whom they maintain a close relationship. In his view, Spanish and Latin American cinema must be seen in Europe, the U.S., and the Asian market.
“The Spanish Screenings on Tour project has allowed us to bring Spanish projects this year to Las Vegas, where we participated in the American Film Market; and last year to the MIA market in Rome. Ultimately, we aim to transcend the borders that limit us and reach other strategic territories that interest us. I think we are on the right path, even though we haven’t yet reached the finish line. But I always believe that the journey is more important than the destination.”
Spanish Screenings on Tour is one of the initiatives of Spanish Screenings XXL: An International Market for Spanish Audiovisual Production. Its goal is to strengthen and create new business opportunities for the audiovisual industry and support its international expansion. To this end, it organizes itinerant events to promote and sell Spanish content in strategic territories. The initiative involves the Ministry of Culture, through the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Service, ICEX Spain Export and Investment, the Málaga Festival, and the San Sebastián Festival.
This initiative is part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), aimed at reinforcing Spain’s role as Europe’s audiovisual hub. It is driven by the Ministry of Culture through ICAA and the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Service through ICEX Spain Export and Investment, the Málaga Festival, and the San Sebastián Festival. Its core principles are equality, diversity, transparency, and sustainability.
