Julio Bracho, the Mexican actor who plays dictator Rafael Trujillo in the series El Chivo, produced by RTI for Televisa, portrayed a little known facet of the leader: a man profoundly in love with his country, and vice versa, as demonstrated by the collective mourning the day of his assassination.“It’s so complex and strong that it is the character every actor wants to play,” Bracho told PRODU on location at La Calera, north of Bogota.Production started May 1st and will go on for 16 weeks in different cities across Colombia. It will feature 60 episodes produced by three units, each commanded by seasoned directors, and will showcase an international cast.Bracho, one of the most coveted actors in the Mexican market, said the series was riveting and had all the elements to become a hit. It is based on the Mario Vargas Llosa book La Fiesta Del Chivo, adapted for TV by Kiko Olivieri.He said that this new super series format, shorter than telenovelas and shot like film, was the kind of project he was drawn to. “I got tired of telenovelas. I believe this kind of series, which are starting to be coined ‘serielas’ work better for everyone,” added Bracho.He said he was so comfortable working in Colombia that he did not feel like he was outside of Mexico. He praised the beauty of the locations, as well as the wardrobe and art direction of this series set in the 1950’s.El Chivo of RTI for Televisa will premiere in the U.S. on UniMás.
