Nina de Azúcar is the latest major production by Del Barrio Producciones, premiering Monday, December 2, at 9:40PM on América Televisión in Peru. Its debut became the most-watched program that day on Peruvian TV, peaking at 24 points and averaging a 20.9 rating, according to Kantar Ibope Media.
This new production, directed by Michelle Alexander, was written by Argentine screenwriter Marcela Citterio. It marks her first collaboration with the Peruvian production house and combines humor, romance, and unexpected twists.
With 60 episodes, Nina de Azúcar followed the finale of the hit telenovela Tu Nombre y el Mío, which ended as the leader in its time slot, averaging a 16.8 rating.
What sets this telenovela apart is its groundbreaking 360-degree approach that transcends the screen to engage audiences through various touchpoints. For instance, each episode includes a recipe, the desserts featured in the show will be sold, and there will be contests, baking classes, social media content, and interactive events.
Citterio told PRODU she was “very, very happy” to return to writing telenovelas, feeling the adrenaline of crafting daily episodes and creating a beautiful story alongside her daughter Chiara Francia and Carolina Carmo.
“We are all thrilled, and I can’t sleep. I can’t think of anything else. They even invited me to the launch, where I saw the impressive set and production. The chemistry between the lead actors is fantastic,” said Citterio. She added that Peruvian productions have improved significantly over the years and are now on par with any novela.
“I’m very, very grateful. Honestly, I didn’t expect this when Michelle contacted me. It’s truly a wonderful way to end the year.”
Citterio believes the story has the potential to appeal to international markets because of its universal themes. It revolves around a soccer player and a pastry chef facing severe financial difficulties who start a relationship out of mutual convenience. “It has that family romantic comedy vibe, along with sensuality and romance. Plus, all the pastry work shown is real, adding another layer of flavor to the story.”
She admitted she had long wanted to return to telenovelas, which grow richer with each episode thanks to audience feedback. “It’s a passion—you’re thinking about the story and its twists and turns 24/7.”
Nina de Azúcar stars Patricia Barreto as Nina and Argentine actor Nacho Di Marco as Ramiro. The cast also includes talented actors such as Haydeé Cáceres, Nicolás Fantinato, Paola Grappa, Fiorella Díaz, Iván Chávez, José Miguel Argüelles, and Vanessa Saba, among others.
OTHER PROJECTS
Citterio is currently 100% focused on the telenovela but is also working on two series and a film, though she cannot reveal much about them yet.
