Alexander Marín, VP of Distribution at RCN Studios, believes the series Darío Gómez: El Rey de Despecho will perform well on free-to-air TV despite already being available on streaming platforms.
RCN Studios has strongly invested in premium content based on real-life Colombian personalities. An example of this is the series Darío Gómez: El Rey de Despecho. The production premiered its first episodes on Prime Video this past October, even before filming was completed. Since then, the platform has been releasing five episodes weekly, and the series is set to air on the RCN channel next January.
“It’s a biographical series much in the style of what we did with Rigo and Leandro Díaz, focusing on icons of Colombian culture that we believe can cross borders,” said Alexander Marín, VP of Distribution at RCN Studios, during the recent MIP Cancun event.
Regarding Darío Gómez: El Rey de Despecho, Marín highlighted it as a story of love, perseverance, and hard work about a unique musical figure in Latin America. He revealed, “We’ve completed filming and are now in post-production. We’ve already delivered over 50 episodes to Amazon for their platform.”
Marín expressed optimism about the format’s potential to succeed across various platforms: “The product speaks for itself. I believe it has a strong appeal, complementing the audience of free-to-air television. For us, it’s exciting to be confident that by mid-next year, when the series finishes airing on the channel, we will have reached 100% of the Colombian audience.”
He also praised the efforts of RCN Studios and the leadership of Juan Pablo Posada in fostering a creative and professional environment that he described as “unique in the market,” providing the production team with the opportunity to express themselves in a space where new ideas are well-received.
