Sofía Vergara will play the Colombian drug lady Griselda Blanco in a Netflix series. The project includes executive producers the creative team of Narcos, Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Andrés Baiz, and Carlo Bernard serving. The series, titled Griselda, features Ingrid Escajeda as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Vergara, in addition to starring, will also serve as executive producer with Luis Balaguer for LatinWE. Baiz will direct all episodes.
In six 50-minute episodes, the series will tell the life story of Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most important cartels in history. Blanco was a devoted mother, who with her charm and savagery navigated skillfully between family and business. She was known as “the black widow” or “godmother of cocaine” and was murdered in 2012.
“Griselda Blanco was a character of great significance whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion-dollar empire, years before many of her more notorious male counterparts were known,” said Vergara. ‟We are delighted to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés, and Netflix to help us bring the story of her life to the screen,” she said according to Variety.
“For a long time, Griselda Blanco has been an exciting project for Sofía and we are grateful that she and her partners at LatinWe chose us to help her tell that story. Sofía is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story written by Doug and Ingrid, and led by the incredible Andrés Baiz, means that we will have a very exciting series to share with the public,” said Newman.
This is not the first time that the story of Blanco has been portrayed on screens. In 2017, the movie Cocaine Godmother told her story starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the biopic The Godmother with Jennifer Lopez a Blanco is also in development with STX Films.
