Karen Barroeta, EVP of Production and Development, Telemundo Global Studios, was joined by Ana Celia Urquidi, CEO of Atenea Media, in a panel at MIP Cancun about how Telemundo Global Studios has continued making melodrama for new audiences.
“Love sells. A good story plus love, appeals to young people. We bring the main attributes of a melodrama to shorter formats with topics for younger audiences. In the end, the story rules and we are trying to give different stories,” said Barroeta.
She noted that since the formats are shorter and more dynamic, the investment has been greater, so more investment equals better quality, which allows the product to be released on more platforms in different parts of the world, with universally relevant stories, generally linked to some love story.
Barroeta also mentioned that the studios in Mexico are working very well. She also said that regarding the eight weeks of recordings of season 8 of El Señor de los Cielos they have been working with up to four units daily and already used more than 1,000 extras.
“Mexico has been a dream, we’re recording 100% on location to give the content more veracity. This eighth season is going to be great, so much that I can anticipate that we are going to start writing the ninth season,” Barroeta reported.
