Telemundo: Producing a reality show like La Isla: Desafío Extremo in Turkey presented a unique logistical challenge

Each filming location was meticulously chosen

While Telemundo has produced numerous reality shows outside the US in Latin America and the Caribbean, La Isla: Desafío Extremo (based on Caracol TV’s original El Desafío) marks their first production in Turkey. This venture is a collaboration with Acunmedya, the production company behind eight seasons of Exatlón USA, with a ninth season currently in development.

“This is our first time taking a reality show to the other side of the world. It’s an immense challenge that we’re incredibly excited about. We’re immersed in new cultures, overcoming unique logistical hurdles, and learning something new every day,” Francisco “Cisco” Suárez, Executive VP of Primetime Unscripted and Specials at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and Executive Producer of the project, told PRODU.

PRODUCING IN TURKEY

Suárez emphasized that working in Turkey has been an incredibly rewarding experience. “The people here are exceptionally hospitable and always welcoming. From the outset, they’ve made us feel right at home, even with the language and cultural differences.”

Suárez noted that producing a reality show in Turkey has presented significant challenges. “We encountered logistical and coordination hurdles due to the country’s distinct language, culture, and customs. Our team had to adjust to a different schedule, new work processes, and even unfamiliar dietary preferences.”

He described Turkey as an extraordinary country boasting stunning locations where Eastern and Western traditions intertwine. Each filming location was meticulously chosen. “From the vibrant energy of Istanbul to the pristine white-sand beaches and the awe-inspiring sandstone formations of Cappadocia, Turkey’s diverse landscapes not only enhance the visual appeal of the show but also contribute to its narrative depth. We hope our viewers are as captivated by these locations as we were in capturing them.”

Suárez explained that pre-production for La Isla: Desafío Extremo spanned approximately six months. During this phase, locations were scouted, casting was conducted, content was developed, and challenges were designed.

He stated that filming for the reality show will span three and a half months, covering over 4,000 miles across Turkey. “The series is planned for 66 three-hour episodes,” he added.

LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES

For Suárez, the greatest challenge of this production was orchestrating the countless details with precision. From transportation and meals to remote filming locations, meticulous planning was essential. “Constructing complex set-ups on mountaintops or coastlines is no easy feat, compounded by unpredictable weather conditions. We’ve had to halt production due to torrential downpours or blinding sandstorms.”

He noted that the challenges extended beyond the contestants to the production team as well. “Each day brings new adventures and opportunities to adapt and conquer obstacles together. While demanding, the experience is incredibly rewarding. It fosters team unity and teaches us resilience and creativity in the face of adversity,” he expressed enthusiastically.

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

When inquired about the technology employed in producing La Isla: Desafío Extremo, Suárez emphasized Telemundo’s commitment to utilizing state-of-the-art equipment for optimal production quality. “From high-definition cameras and drones capturing Turkey’s breathtaking landscapes to cutting-edge special effects, we meticulously attend to every detail. Our goal is to immerse our audience in the action, allowing them to experience every moment intensely.”

Suárez adds that this new competition offers an exhilarating and fresh experience for viewers. “With La Isla, we immerse both the audience and participants in an extreme survival adventure set in the unique landscape of Turkey.”

The participants not only face physical and mental trials but must also adapt to diverse living conditions across the three beaches

He noted that participants not only face physical and mental trials but must also adapt to diverse living conditions across our three beaches: Playa Alta, Playa Media, and Playa Baja. Each beach offers varying levels of comfort and resources, forcing participants to fully utilize their survival skills.

Telemundo’s innovation extends beyond the challenges faced by contestants. The show’s locations—from Istanbul to the Cappadocian landscapes—and diverse cast, which reflects the cultural richness of our audience, are key elements. “We promote inclusivity by giving voice to different stories and perspectives. Additionally, we prioritize the emotional journey of participants, showcasing their growth and development to foster a deep connection with viewers.”

360 EXPERIENCE

Suárez mentioned that to engage the audience, a 360-degree experience was created from the outset through digital platforms. “We’ll share exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, personal interviews, and never-before-seen moments. Our goal is not just for viewers to watch the show, but to forge a genuine connection with the participants by uncovering their stories, challenges, and triumphs,” he said.
