TelevisaUnivision is set to premiere Fugitivas en Busca de la Libertad on July 1st at 8:30 PM. This new production by Lucero Suárez carries on her signature focus on family stories, while also weaving in a powerful theme of sisterhood, as revealed in a recent interview.
“It’s an adaptation of a Chilean telenovela, rewritten by my team of writers: Jimena Merodio, Carmen Sepúlveda, Luis Reynoso, and myself. When I take on a new project, I begin by searching for stories. This time, we sifted through 40 to 45 telenovelas, ultimately choosing this one for its powerful portrayal of female solidarity. It centers around a woman who is wrongly accused of a crime. Her mission becomes one of finding the evidence that will clear her name. It’s a story about the pursuit of justice,” she explained.
Suárez goes beyond portraying just a story about women. She emphasizes the importance of showcasing how people come together and support one another. “For me, it’s crucial to instill values in people and demonstrate that life has more good people than bad. After all, I believe in humanity and always advocate for us to strive to be better versions of ourselves. Today’s productions often focus heavily on police work and violence, but that’s not all there is to life. It’s also about the opportunities we have.”
Praising Televisa’s legacy in telenovelas, she noted their commitment to family-oriented and uplifting stories. “They’ve never strayed from that mission of creating television for the whole family. It’s been their motto, and they’ve consistently delivered on it.”
WOMEN PROTAGONISTS
The series will be filmed across 80 episodes, with locations split between Mexico City and a dedicated set. Notably, the production secured permission to film inside a real prison. Recordings are expected to wrap on July 15th.
At the press launch, actress Érika Buenfil highlighted a unique element of the telenovela: the inclusion of women who have experienced prison for various reasons. “These women are striving to move forward in life, showcasing their strength and entrepreneurial spirit,” she explained. Buenfil also noted that this is her third collaboration with producer Lucero Suárez. “She has a remarkable talent for crafting compelling stories and characters,” Buenfil said. “She balances high production value with a meticulous approach, resulting in truly exceptional work.”
Fugitivas en Busca de la Libertad follows the story of Frida, Lisset, Lorena, and Montse – four women imprisoned, one wrongfully. A dramatic prison break throws their lives into chaos, forcing them to flee. Seeking a fresh start, they find refuge in a bar, hoping to build new lives as fugitives.
Created by Diego Muñoz, the series boasts original storytelling. Directed by Santiago Barbosa and Jorge Robles, it features a stellar cast including Érika Buenfil, Sachi Tamashiro, Rocío de Santiago, Daniela Álvarez, César Évora, Juan Martín Jáuregui, Arturo Carmona, and Arap Bethke.
