TelevisaUnivision has four major music properties in the U.S.: Premio Lo Nuestro, Premios Juventud, Latin Grammy, and since 2023, Latin American Music Awards.
“We understand very well our commitment to Hispanics and what they are passionate about. Without a doubt, the expression and use of music to tell stories is one,” said Ignacio Meyer, president of US Networks of TelevisaUnivision.
Meyer said that they have the most extensive radio network in the US in Uforia. “To complement that, for decades we have had programs that recognize Latin music. We are the home of Latin music. We intend to continue and pursue the success of the global Latin passion, and that is why we have devoted ourselves to making these programs grow, to make them different from each other; we already have four, and all together allow us to celebrate the great range of Latin music as an expression of global culture.”
He said that they are very proud of those four TV programs because of their massive production. “We began the year in Miami with Premio Lo Nuestro which is the longest-running Latin music show that celebrates Latin music through the lens of television. Then this year for the first time we managed to celebrate the American Music Awards in Spanish, a very important brand and we did this in Las Vegas. Now we are traveling to Puerto Rico to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Premios Juventud on Thursday, July 20, another award that was created on Univision by Univision, in this case, to celebrate the US Hispanic youth and amplify what matters to them.”
The fourth event is the Latin Grammy that this year, for the first time is held in Spain. “For years, the Latin Recording Academy has considered locations for the Latin Grammys to travel. The Latin Grammy has traveled to several cities. It is a well-known practice of this international organization representing Latin music creators wherever they live,” he said.
In this year an agreement was reached with Andalusia and Seville, to bring the Latin Grammys to Spain. “It will give us one more protagonist, without a doubt the lyrics and the influence of Spain have always been part of Latin music from composers such as Manuel Alejandro to artists like Alejandro Sanz. They have always been part of the ecosystem. We expect to see the romance and warmth of a southern Spanish city represented at the Latin Grammys, but it’s not going to be a Spanish award. This continues to be the celebration of Latin music with more tradition and integrity,” he said.
In 2024 the Latin Grammys will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. The city where they will take place has not yet been revealed. “We dream of the 25th anniversary but the first step is to choose the host city, we have not done it yet, we are already thinking about it. I think it’s going to be a by-product of what we achieve this year.”
