The strong irruption of OTTs has opened a path that moved the foundations of the industry. However, coexistence of the diverse platforms will be, for a long time, the norm. That is Eduardo Stigol´s vision. He is the CEO of TuVes, who recently visited Bogotá to take part in NexTV Colombia&Andina 2018.
“Integrated OTTs seem valuable to me as the complement for TV Everywhere, but there is still a long way to go to think that it is going to replace cable or DTH. If you don´t have a very big operation, you can´t put all the channels in streaming, because it has a huge monthly cost, mainly if one of those channels is airing a game, for example, of the World Cup final with Colombia, everything explodes. You can´t have an infrastructure set up for that day and pay that price all year long,” mentioned Stigol.
Additionally, he highlights the uneven realities between big capitals and rural areas in Latin America. “There are a lot of things that are going to arrive in Latin America very fast, but to the big cities, and there are things that will continue to exist, such as DTH. There are many places where it will take a long time to even think about TV on broadband. For example, you can receive a product in which you hear the goal three seconds later, and on streaming, it can be 30 or 40 seconds later. I think they will coexist for a long time.”
