Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace –– Benito Juárez, president of México, July 15th, 1867. I started with this quote because I believe respect is such an important part of advertising today, more than ever. Not to achieve world peace, of course, but to achieve great results. When we respect what we do and those who we do it with, good things happen on their own. Working in the advertising industry is truly a privilege, at least that’s the way I see it. Not everyone has the opportunity to have a career in an area as full of passion and energy as our industry. We face different challenges and rewards every day. It’s a career so full of ups and downs. And the only thing Advertising asks from us in exchange, is to give your very best every day and for all of us to respect every aspect of it. Respect the ideas. Respect attention to detail. Respect hard work. Respect the hard work of others. Respect time. Ours and others. Respect the brands we work on. Respect the competition. Respect our clients. Respect the people that buy our clients’ products. Respect the companies we work with, such as production companies. Respect the ones that think differently than us. Respect people that are different. Respect women, men, everyone. Respect the ones who are just starting in advertising. Respect those that have been at it longer than us. Respect evolution. Respect history. Respect another people’s opinion. Respect being an ad person. Oddly enough, you can’t demand respect, you can only earn it. And this is why I encourage everyone reading this to make the effort to respect the fragility of an idea, and the long, arduous process it takes to make it come to life. I believe that if we use this list as a guide, and analyze how we’re doing every day, we can improve as professionals exponentially. And by default, as an industry.
