Sandy Auren, Accounts Planner at Dieste wrote an article on Provoque Weekly where she talks about how entertainment portrays life´s joys and sorrows artistically. “With the production of content at such rapid pace, many of the most successful shows and cult series are using the screen as a canvas to talk about the hot issues that afflict our society today” she explained. Auren uses as examples, three of the current most popular series: The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange is the New Black (OITNB), and Mr. Robot. The Handmaid’s Tale is based on the 1985 book by the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, and is aired on Hulu. There, she highlights social criticism and how women are treated in a futuristic society in which fertility has decreased dramatically and the few fertile women are forced to bear the children of leaders in a conservative and tyrannical world. This series has become the inspiration for family planning movements and has generated conversations on social networks, “especially on Twitter where many draw parallels between the show´s content to ongoing political conversations” she wrote. Regarding OITNB, that portrays women of color and explores incarcerated women’s issues, the story has covered things like the complex prison industry or the Black Lives Matter Movement, many of whose members have criticized the series because they feel that OITNB misrepresents the lives of women in both federal and private prisons. “But the conversation is started and entertainment has helped provide that springboard to the masses about issues that perhaps are not at the forefront of their everyday lives” she expressed.
