Q: When did you decide to devote your life to be a director?
HC: I think it all began in the University when I was ending my degree, which is when you are really studying subjects that thrill you. In my case, I was tutored by one of my university’s professor, Laura Valdivieso, who was always looking out for my professional development.
Q: How do the photographer and the director coexist?
HC: I think that in my case they complement each other perfectly and even this offers me more tools to perform those functions. As a photographer I must direct the talent and as a director it is always good to have that developed photographic sensitivity and technical knowledge to better understand what you are seeking for. Even it is always useful when I work as a DP and director at the same time.
Q: Are you working in any fiction project now?
HC: At this moment I am writing. It’s a long process and of patience. Sometimes routine makes it difficult for us to be a bit more rigorous, but in my opinion that is key in order to take this type of projects forward.
Q: With which brands have you worked with recently?
HC: I have had the opportunity to work for Huawei in 2018 Russia FIFA’s world cup, Adidas, Televisa, TV promotions for series such as Rosario Tijeras, Estafeta.
Q: How do you envision advertising’s future?
HC: I feel that advertising has been mutating to something much more comprehensive that covers both traditional media (TV, print) to social networks. I feel that digital platforms have, today, much more power than traditional media. I think this represents an even greater challenge both for the advertising agencies and for the directors / producers in generating powerful work that can be entertaining enough to make people watch what you are trying to say instead of “skipping advertising” which is now option that these platforms give us.
Q: Where is Henry Cuicas heading?
HC: I want to film, I want do photograph, always. I do not know where I am heading, but as long as I’m directing or taking pictures of what I like, I can feel comfortable with what I’m doing and I would definitely feel fulfilled. Enjoy it, is how I see it.
