The telenovela Monteverde, produced by Lucero Suárez for TelevisaUnivision, has officially begun filming at a location in Mexico City. The cast and production team gathered for the traditional clapperboard ceremony to kick off the project, which is set to premiere on June 16 at 8:30pm on Las Estrellas.
Starring África Zavala and Gabriel Soto, Monteverde blends romance, humor, and suspense. Suárez described it as a story set in a town with no women—until one arrives, seeking refuge from a crime she didn’t commit. Her presence disrupts the town’s dynamics, leading to multiple love stories, some humorous and others tinged with suspense. “Overall, it’s a love story with a lighthearted tone,” she said.
GABRIEL SOTO’S RETURN TO TELEVISION
The production marks Gabriel Soto’s return to TV after a year-and-a-half hiatus. The actor expressed gratitude for continuing his career with TelevisaUnivision after 30 years in the industry. “I play Óscar León, a very different character from what I’ve done before. He’s bitter and ill-tempered due to past hardships, but falling for the protagonist changes him. I love working in rural settings and with children, and I also like the look they created for me.”
ÁFRICA ZAVALA TAKES ON A DUAL ROLE
Meanwhile, África Zavala faces the challenge of portraying two completely different characters. “It’s a drastic change from my role in Papás por Conveniencia. That’s the beauty of acting—getting these opportunities. Here, I play twin sisters: one is a nun, and the other is not, which leads to very amusing situations.”
Zavala highlighted that Monteverde is a traditional telenovela with humor, something she believes is currently missing from television: “Shows like this allow us to laugh at life’s problems.”
A STORY OF FATE AND TRANSFORMATION
Lucero Suárez revealed that Monteverde is an 85-episode adaptation, with a six-month filming schedule at locations including Tepeji del Río, Malinalco, and Mexico City.
The story follows Carolina (África Zavala), whose life changes in an instant when she is accused of fraud—a crime committed by her husband. Forced to flee with her son Andrés (Juan Pablo Velasco) and their nanny Juanita (Jimena Martínez) just before the police arrive, Carolina turns to her twin sister, Celeste, for help. Celeste, a devoted nun, finds herself entangled in Carolina’s troubles, proving that destiny has a plan for them both. This marks the beginning of a life-changing journey for Carolina.
