During the Thought Leadership talks at NATPE 2012, César Conde, president of Univision Networks, told the moderator Melissa Grego, executive editor of B&C, that starting next week all the networks’ primetime will feature English closed on CC3. This will apply to the network’s complete weeknight block, coinciding with the premiere of the newest novela from Univision Studios and Venevision, El Talismán, on January 30 at 8pm ET/PT (7pm Central).“The continued success of the telenovela genre speaks to its broad appeal that crosses culture and language, which is why, as part of our commitment to connect audiences to our culture, we are delivering our novela block with close captioning in English,” said Conde.Monday through Friday, English-language closed captioning will be made available on Televisa’s novela Una Familia Con Suerte (A Fortunate Family) at 7pm ET/PT (6pm CT), El Talismán and on Televisa’s highly-popular La Que No Podia Amar (The One That Couldn’t Love) airing at 9pm ET/PT (8pm CT).The executive pointed out there are some misconceptions in the marketplace about Univisión: firstly, the company is not just one channel, but 12 channels with an entire media platform. Also, many are unaware that most nights Univisión outperforms Anglo networks in the 18-49 demographic; and that it does not mainly attract the older demographic but, contrary to popular belief, it draws a younger audience compared to the general market. Finally, he emphasized the channel does not only attract Spanish-speaking audiences, but also appeals to bilingual viewers.Conde also pointed out the company determined that one of the ways they can contribute to the Hispanic market is by bringing investigative programs and documentaries, an area in which the company is investing heavily.
